My theory of why the Mayans collapsed is that someone came from Europe with a large military and destroyed the Mayan empire; their monuments, the people, and their houses. This is because if you look at all the evidence, it proves it. For example, the unfinished alter; one side was complete, and one side was never finished, and there are no known monuments at Copan dated after that (822 A.D.). This means that when the military came from Europe, the Mayans were building the monument, but never got to finish it, and didn't build any others. Another piece of evidence is that some of the houses near Copan show signs of erosion around 822 A.D., probably from over-farming the hillsides that the houses were on. This could be because before the military and their leader from Europe destroyed the empire, they could have made the Mayans give them food (not to mention maybe riches and clothes too), and this resulted in over-farming the hillsides.Also, by 1200-1250 A.D., the Copan Valley had returned to forest from an area of heavy farming. We know this because mahogany pollen is found in forest areas, not areas of farming, and mahogany pollen was found in that area dating to 1200-1250 A.D. Before that, there is little to no evidence of mahogany pollen there. All these facts and this supporting evidence shows that a European nobleman came with a strong army and destroyed the Mayan civilization.

These are some of the erosion debris found in some houses near Copan. This is solid evidence that the Europeans made the Mayans over-farm the hillsides because they wanted their food.
